Our Mission
Who We Are
The World Veterinary Environmental Alliance has formed to focus the global veterinary profession towards action on climate stability, sustainability, and biodiversity, through education, advocacy and practical leadership. We bring together veterinarians and animal health professionals, industry, academia and civil society to protect animals, people and the planet.
What We Do
We inform, connect and empower the veterinary profession to:
- Build knowledge and capacity on climate variation, biodiversity loss and sustainability and their effects on animal health and welfare.
- Advocate for evidence-based and non-partisan policies that drive systemic change.
- Share solutions to reduce environmental footprints and emissions in veterinary practice and on farms through practical, science-based solutions.
- Promote the well-being and resilience of veterinary professionals working at the frontline of these global challenges.
Why WVEA, Why Now?
Six of nine planetary boundaries have been transgressed. Climate disruption, biodiversity loss and pollution are harming livestock, wildlife and companion animals, with cascading social and economic impacts.
Veterinarians are trusted, practical, and science-based professionals. We work across every community, rural and urban, rich and poor, and across all animals: livestock, wildlife, and companion animals. We see the impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution on the health and welfare of animals firsthand, and are in a unique position to take action to protect them.
Vets care for our pets, but they do so much more! Our profession collaborates across animal health, welfare and production, biosecurity, biodiversity, One Health, business and the economy, and the global food supply.
So far, no global veterinary body exists to lead a coordinated response. The profession is ready, but fragmented. There is interest, expertise, and urgency, but without a unifying alliance, our voice is too quiet and our impact too small.
WVEA exists to fill this critical gap: to connect, guide, and empower veterinarians worldwide to collaborate globally and act locally.
Our Approach – Act Locally, Collaborate Globally
A global alliance that shares resources and models; amplifies national successes; and coordinates targeted initiatives via five Focus Groups:
- Education
- Global Policy
- Biodiversity
- Sustainability In-Clinic & Equine
- Sustainability On-Farm
By working together to grow the number of veterinarians and animal care professionals who champion climate action, biodiversity and sustainability, we will influence communities, industries, and governments to implement policies that protect animals, people, and the planet.
